Education Requirements for the Community Outreach Worker

Community Outreach Workers will find that their employment opportunities are some of the broadest in the Human Services field. A huge variety of organizations have seen the benefits of having a permanent staff and strategy around interacting with their community and creating dialogues around various issues.

In order to become a Community Outreach Worker you will need to have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Social or Behavioral Science field. While you are earning your Bachelor’s degree it is extremely wise to add a foreign language minor to your class workload. This will allow you to have access to jobs where Community Outreach involves interaction with populations that have English as a second language. You will want to consider where you are planning on working and learning a language that applies to that area and the kind of work you want to do. If you are unsure as to what languages might be useful, you can always choose Spanish as that has the broadest application across the country. You will want to earn your degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Cultural Anthropology
  • Human Services

As the workforce has become so well educated in the past decade employers are becoming extremely choosy in who they hire and only considering the most highly qualified candidates. While you can find work as a Community Outreach Worker with only your Bachelor’s, if you want to have access to the highest paying opportunities and the greatest diversity of potential positions, you will want to earn your Master’s degree in one of the above disciplines. Once you have your Master’s you will find that you get more interviews and are always considered one of the top candidates for any job you apply for.
