Ohio Social Work License Requirements: SW-T, SWA, LSW, LISW, and LISW-S
Ohio has four social work license levels (SWA, LSW, LISW, and LISW-S), plus a trainee designation (SW-T) for MSW students. Each requires a different level of education, from an associate degree for the SWA up to a master’s degree for the LISW. All credentials are issued by the Ohio CSWMFT Board.

Social Work Trainee (SW-T)
The Social Work Trainee (SW-T) designation is for students actively enrolled in a master’s-level social work program. It allows you to work as a social worker during a required internship or practicum. You work under supervision as part of your degree training, not independently.
What this designation allows: Practice as a social worker during your MSW internship only. It doesn’t authorize independent work and expires when your program ends.
To earn the SW-T designation:
- Be registered in a CSWE-accredited Master of Social Work internship course.
- Submit your application online through the CSWMFT board’s licensing portal.
- Pass a BCI and FBI criminal background check. Checks completed by another agency are not accepted.
Social Worker Assistant (SWA)
The Social Worker Assistant (SWA) is the entry-level credential in Ohio, requiring an associate degree in social service technology or equivalent coursework as defined by the board. It’s a practical starting point if you want to begin working in human services while you continue your education toward a higher license.
What this credential allows: SWAs cannot engage in independent social work practice. All work must be performed under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional, such as an LSW, LISW, licensed counselor, psychologist, or registered nurse.
To earn the SWA credential:
- Earn an associate degree in social service technology or equivalent coursework as defined by the CSWMFT Board. Programs must include core social work coursework and a social service practicum. You must maintain at least a C- average.
- Pay the $60 application fee plus a $3.50 processing fee and apply through the Ohio eLicense system, where you’ll create a user ID and password.
- Watch the Ohio board’s laws and rules video, which covers your scope of responsibilities as an SWA.
- Pass a BCI and FBI criminal background check.
- Have your school send official transcripts to the Ohio board. The board prefers transcripts emailed to [email protected]. If email isn’t available, mail them to 77 South High Street, 24th Floor, Room 2468, Columbus, Ohio 43215-6171.
Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
The Licensed Social Worker (LSW) is the first full license in Ohio and requires at least a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited institution. Most social workers hold the LSW while working toward the LISW.
What this credential allows: LSWs may practice general social work but must receive supervision for clinical and psychotherapy services. If you want to provide social psychotherapy, you must do so under the supervision of an LISW or another independently licensed mental health professional.
To earn the LSW:
- Earn a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)-accredited program, or a master’s or doctoral degree in social work. Learn about Ohio MSW programs.
- Pay the $80 application fee and a $3.50 processing fee, then apply through the eLicense system.
- Watch the Ohio board’s laws and rules video to understand your responsibilities as an LSW.
- Pass a BCI and FBI criminal background check.
- Pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Level Exam. Register through the ASWB and schedule your appointment at a Pearson VUE Testing Center. The exam fee is $260.
- Have your school email official transcripts to [email protected], or mail them to the board address above.
Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
The Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) is Ohio’s independent practice credential. It allows you to work without supervision, open a private practice, and diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders within the scope of social work.
What this credential allows: LISWs have expanded authority, including the ability to practice independently. They can provide counseling, social psychotherapy, and psychosocial interventions without supervision. The LISW is also a prerequisite for the LISW-S endorsement.
To earn the LISW:
- Earn a Master of Social Work (MSW) or Doctorate of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program. Learn about Ohio MSW programs or the Doctorate in Social Work (DSW).
- Accrue 3,000 hours of post-degree, post-LSW supervised social work experience over a minimum of two years, with at least 150 hours of supervision from an LISW-S.
- Have your training supervisors document your hours using the board’s professional employment reference form.
- Pay the $100 application fee and a $3.50 processing fee, then apply through the eLicense system.
- Pass the ASWB Clinical or Advanced Generalist exam, depending on practice focus and board approval. The exam fee is $260. Register through ASWB and schedule at a Pearson VUE Testing Center.
- Watch the Ohio board’s laws and rules video.
- Submit your MSW transcripts to the board via email or mail.
- Pass a BCI and FBI criminal background check.
Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Designation (LISW-S)
The LISW-S is an endorsement added to your LISW license. It authorizes you to supervise social workers who are accruing the hours required for their own LISW. Without the LISW-S, you can’t serve as a qualifying supervisor for LISW candidates.
What this credential allows: Everything the LISW permits, plus the authority to provide documented training supervision toward LISW licensure for other social workers.
To earn the LISW-S:
- Hold an active Ohio LISW with at least one year of post-licensure experience.
- Complete at least nine hours of continuing education in supervision after receiving your LISW, or complete a master’s-level social work supervision course within the past three years.
- Apply for the supervision endorsement through your eLicense account.
License Renewal in Ohio
All Ohio social work credentials renew on a two-year cycle from the date of issuance. Before renewal, you must complete 30 hours of continuing education, including at least three hours in ethics. The full 30 hours may be completed through approved distance learning or home study. The board typically sends renewal notices electronically before your expiration date.
Out-of-State Licensure
If you hold an active social work license from another state, you may be eligible to apply for an Ohio LSW or LISW by endorsement. Ohio will consider your existing ASWB exam scores and supervised experience. Scores more than seven years old only qualify if you currently hold an active license. You’ll still submit an application through the eLicense system and pass Ohio’s background check requirements.
Ohio has also joined the Social Work Licensure Compact, which allows licensed social workers in member states to practice across state lines more easily. The implementation status is evolving; check the Social Work Licensure Compact website for the latest updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does LISW mean in Ohio?
LISW stands for Licensed Independent Social Worker. It’s Ohio’s full independent practice license, allowing you to work without supervision, open a private practice, and diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders within the scope of social work. To qualify, you need an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program, 3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience, and a passing score on the ASWB Clinical or Advanced Generalist exam.
What does LISW-S mean?
LISW-S stands for Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Designation. It’s an endorsement on the LISW license that authorizes you to supervise social workers who are working toward their own LISW. To earn it, you need at least one year of experience as an LISW and at least nine hours of post-licensure continuing education in supervision.
What’s the difference between an LSW and an LISW in Ohio?
The LSW requires a bachelor’s degree and allows general social work practice, but clinical and psychotherapy services must be performed under supervision. The LISW requires a master’s degree plus 3,000 hours of supervised experience and allows fully independent practice, including opening a private practice. Most social workers hold the LSW while working toward their LISW.
How long does it take to become a licensed social worker in Ohio?
Reaching the LSW level typically takes four years to complete a BSW. Advancing to the LISW requires an MSW, usually two additional years, plus at least two years of supervised post-degree practice. From start to LISW, you’re typically looking at six to eight years, depending on your education path and experience timeline.
What continuing education is required to renew an Ohio social work license?
Ohio social work licenses renew every two years. You must complete 30 hours of continuing education before renewal, including at least three hours in ethics. All 30 hours may be completed through approved distance learning or home study.
Key Takeaways
- Four licenses plus two designations: Ohio issues the SWA, LSW, LISW, and LISW-S licenses, as well as the SW-T trainee designation for MSW students.
- Degree shapes your options: An associate degree qualifies you for the SWA, a bachelor’s for the LSW, and a master’s for the LISW. Most candidates progress through tiers, though some entry levels may be bypassed depending on education.
- The LISW requires more than a degree: You need 3,000 hours of post-degree, post-LSW supervised experience over at least two years before you can apply.
- The LISW-S is an endorsement, not a separate license: It adds supervisory authority to your existing LISW and requires one year of post-LISW experience plus CE in supervision.
- Renewal is every two years: All Ohio social work credentials require 30 CE hours per renewal cycle, including three hours in ethics.
