Oregon has three tiers of certification as offered through the. The various tiers of certification are known by the following titles: Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC- I) Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor I (CADC-II), Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor II (CADC-III). Every level has its own specific requirements that must be reached in order to achieve that level of certification.

CADC-I Requirements

• Pass a criminal background check.
• High school Diploma or GED for CADC-I, An Associate’s degree in Addiction Counseling is considered very helpful.
• One year or 1,000 hours of supervised experience in AD counseling.
• You will need 150 hours of education in ICRC/AODA related courses specifically in the following areas: Basic Counseling Skills, Group Counseling Skills, Alcohol Drugs of Abuse Pharmacology, HIV/AIDS Risk Assessment Risk Reduction, and Counseling Ethics
• You must sign the ACCBO Code of Ethics.
• You must pass the NCAC I Examination.

CADC- II Requirements

• Pass a criminal background check.
• Bachelor’s degree in Counseling or closely related field from a regionally accredited school.
• Two years or 4,000 hours of supervised experience in AD counseling.
• You will need 300 hours of education in coursework directly related to: Basic Counseling Skills, Group Counseling Skills, Alcohol Drugs of Abuse Pharmacology, HIV/AIDS Risk Assessment Risk Reduction, Counseling Ethics, Counseling Diverse Populations, Clinical Evaluation, and Co-occurring Disorders.
• You must sign the ACCBO Code of Ethics.
• You must pass the NCAC II Examination.

CADC- III Requirements

• Pass a criminal background check.
• Master’s degree in Counseling or closely related field from an accredited school.
• Three years or 6,000 hours of supervised experience in AD counseling.
• You will need 300 hours of education in coursework directly related: Basic Counseling Skills, Group Counseling Skills, Alcohol Drugs of Abuse Pharmacology, HIV/AIDS Risk Assessment Risk Reduction, Counseling Ethics, Counseling Diverse Populations, Clinical Evaluation, Co-occurring Disorders and Science-based Best Practice
• You must sign the Code of Ethics.
• You must pass the MAC Examination
