Substance Abuse Counseling Certification in Maine

Maine has a certified Substance Abuse Counselor and Licensed level. The two titles are: the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) and the Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC). There is a third level of licensure known as the Alcohol and Drug Counseling Aide which allows you to gain experience for the two higher levels, the Aide’s only requirement is that you have a High School Diploma, pass a criminal background check and be 18 years of age. For the CADC Level

• Pass a criminal background check.
• You must have a High School Diploma and experience or an Associate’s degree in addiction counseling.
• You will need 4,000 hours of supervised work experience working directly with A&D clients.
• The experience must include 3 of the following AODA treatment functions: Clinical evaluation; Treatment Planning; Counseling of individuals, groups, couples or families; Case Management; Client and Family education.
• Passing of the ADC examination as administered by the IC&RC/AODA.

For the LADC Level

• Pass a criminal background check.
• You must have a High School Diploma or a higher degree in addiction counseling which results in progressively less supervised work experience required.
• You will need 6,000 hours of supervised work experience working directly with A&D clients.
• If you have an Associates or Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited school you can reduce the supervised hours required to 4,000.
• If you have a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in addiction therapy or a clinical application behavioral science you can reduce the supervised hours to 2,000.
• If you have an active CADC degree you also only need 2,000 hours.
• Passing of the ADC & Advanced ADC examinations as administered by the IC&RC/AODA.
