Once you have applied you may be considered to have a “temporary license”. You will need to have an application in the board’s office completed and approved.  This allows you to practice social work for an organization while you are studying and taking the license examination. This temporary license will last for up to one year while preparing for the exam.

Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW)

  • If you wish to attain the title Licensed Baccalaureate of Social Work (LBSW) in Alaska, you must first get a Bachelor’s of Social Work Degree from a Board Alaskan Social Workers approved program. You will need to contact the State of Alaska to find out what their specific approved programs are.
  • Once you have your degree you will need to apply for your LBSW title. You will need to provide three professional references. You must be of good moral character. You will need to either pass the Basic level examination in the two years prior to applying for the title.
  • If you previously had a license in another state, you will need to provide verification of 1,500 hours of work as a licensed social worker within the prior 5 years AND completion of continuing education requirements of 45 hours of CE within the previous 5 years. The CE must include at least 6 hours of substance abuse related education and 3 hours of professional ethics training.

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)

  • If you wish to hold the title of Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Alaska, you must first get a Master of Social Work or Doctorate of Social Work degree from a Board of Alaskan Social workers approved program.
  • You will need to contact them to find out what their specific approved programs are.
  • When you have obtained your degree you will need to apply for your LMSW. You will need to provide three professional references. You must be of good moral character. You will need to either pass the Master level examination in the two years prior to applying for the title.
  • If you previously had a license in another state, you will need to provide verification of 1,500 hours of work as a licensed social worker within the prior 5 years AND completion of continuing education requirements of 45 hours of CE within the previous 5 years. The CE must include at least 6 hours of substance abuse related education and 3 hours of professional ethics training.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • If you wish to hold the title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Alaska, you must first get a Master or Doctorate of Social Work degree from a Board of Alaskan Social workers approved program. You will need to contact the state to find out what their specific approved programs are.
  • When you have obtained your degree you will need to apply for your LMSW. You will need to provide three professional references. You must be of good moral character. You will need to either pass the Master level examination in the two years prior to applying for the title. You will also need to provide verification of two years of continuous full-time employment in postgraduate clinical social work or at least 3,000 hours of supervised clinical social work if you had less than full-time employment in at least two years of employment.
  • If you previously had a license in another state you will need to provide verification of 1,500 hours of work as a licensed social worker within the prior 5 years AND completion of continuing education requirements of 45 hours of CE within the previous 5 years. The CE must include at least 6 hours of substance abuse related education and 3 hours of professional ethics training. Once you have completed all of these steps you will be eligible to hold the title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Alaska.
