Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

  • If you wish to attain the title Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Kansas, you must first get a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
  • You must apply for your license and pass a criminal background check. You will need three references including at least two social workers licensed at or above the bachelor level and from your supervisor who oversaw your work. You then need to receive a passing score on an Association of Social Workers ASWB Bachelor Level Exam.
  • You get one renewal of your license without requiring continuing education. After the second renewal you must have successfully completed 40 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)

  • If you want to be eligible to hold the title of Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Kansas, you must first get your Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
  • You must apply for your license and pass a criminal background check. You will need three references including at least two social workers licensed at or above the Master’s level and from your supervisor who oversaw your work. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • If you wish to hold the title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Kansas, you must first get a Master or Doctorate of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
  • You must provide verification of at least 4,000 hours of clinical professional experience under an approved supervision plan to apply for your LCSW title. Of the 4,000 hours at least 2000 should be direct client contact and 1500 hours should be face-to-face direct contact with the client providing assessment and psychotherapy treatment. You must also have at least 110 hours of supervision during a two year period with no more than 60 of those hours with groups who must be six or less in size.
  • You will need three references including at least two social workers licensed at or above the Clinical level and from your supervisor who oversaw your work. Once you have completed and sent in your application you may apply with the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) for their Clinical Level test. Once you pass the test you will be eligible to receive your new title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Kansas.
  • You get one renewal of your license without requiring continuing education. After the second renewal you must have successfully completed 40 contact hours of continuing education.
